Thursdays 9:00-10:00 am Attuning Through Movement

This group is an exploration that supports people in building kinder and more attuned relationships with their bodies, opening new pathways and possibilities toward awareness and release of long-repressed emotions.

This is a weekly 1-hour group that is designed to help people do five things:

  1. Safely reconnect with the body through movement and the felt and/or visual senses.
  2. Explore, experiment with and expand the ability to be present with sensations that come with movements that might otherwise be avoided or classified as undesirable.
  3. Develop a more curious, accepting and nurturing relationship with the body and its wisdom, exactly as it is right now.
  4. Become more aware of muscles and muscle groups that we have commonly and unconsciously forgotten how to relax.
  5. Grow the ability to stay present in the face of intensity or discomfort (gently exploring and honoring the window of tolerance).
  6. Foster the ability to trust the self with regard to what does and does not bring a sense of “rightness” using information from the body.

This course evolved out of the idea that for many reasons, we have learned to avoid particular movements in order to avoid painful or uncomfortable sensations.  And that if we do not interrupt this common tendency, we lose mobility as we age, shrinking physically to a fraction of our potential in terms of flexibility, self expression, circulation, and even our body’s ability to maintain and repair itself.

Our great and loyal bodies have done exactly as we have trained them, to protect us, not just from physical threat, but also from feelings that we fear (mostly unconsciously) could be our demise.  Thus, we move through the world unknowingly bracing and clenching muscle groups large and small in attempts to avoid being undone by the intensity of unresolved emotional hurts that we have been bodily carrying, probably since infancy or very early childhood.   This chronic muscle tension has the effect of interrupting the natural flow of emotional information.  It is my belief that with some support, we can build a curious, gentle and attuned attitude towards our bodies, while simultaneously strengthening emotional intelligence.
